Installation of smart new energy efficient lighting along the old rail trail through the center of Wonthaggi and out to South Dudley edge of town will increase its utility to multiple trail users who move on foot, wheelchair, bicycle, motorised scooter or personal mobility devise. The PV solar lighting units we’re proposing will illuminate from dusk till dawn; it will be illuminated fully for 4 hours then dimmed for the remainder of the night. The new lighting will complement the local Old Energy-New Energy initiative and provide 24/7 security on this popular exercise route.

The trail lighting project will improve visibility at night, increase overall trail access and convenience, give trail users a sense of security and increase the opportunity for physical exercise. Upgrading the usefulness of the trail will facilitate connectedness in our community as a whole, making an important contribution to the Wonthaggi Placemaking Strategy aimed at bringing people together. Illuminating the trail will reduce the possibility of user collisions, and allow trail users to recognize potential threats to their security; bright lights are generally recognized as deterrents of criminal activity in other environments.

Is the proposed lighting stretching down south dudley road past the wetlands? That is desperately needed also. Even so, i absolutely support this initiative.

As an older adult using a mobility scooter, I have used the rail trail in the dark and it would be lovely and more reassuring to use it lit with lights.

That would need to be another project.

Great if rail trail had lighting. It would make it safer for people to walk along in the evenings

I agree with JVR. I would be in favour of this laudable project ONLY IF it did not use LED lighting (opting instead for CFL lamps) and if the light intensity was kept to a minimum. LED, which produces harsh illumination, is inappropriate in a rustic coastal environment and wouldn't be a cost necessity given that solar power is proposed for the project.

LED is best for directional light and last longer. CFL lamps work less efficiently and at low temperatures could stop working. Another disadvantage to CFL's is the mercury contained in the bulb after disposal may cause air and water pollution.

Great to help people in motir scooters and, I see (or actually don't see and carry a torch) other people dog walking before dawn on the track.

If this project is successful the grant should be dependent on using only lighting which will not intrude & spill into the night sky. There is already too much light pollution.

I agree. This is a valid concern. Please see my comment.

The light heads will have an asymmetrical light distribution. All lights will be illuminated at 100% of lighting output for 4 hours. After this time, light will DIM to 30% of full brightness and continue until dawn.
