The Southern Metropolitan Region is a diverse and vibrant area that includes the coastal and inland economic areas. It has the largest population of the six Melbourne regions at over 1 million people, or about 22 per cent of Melbourne’s total population.

Following engagement with its community throughout 2017, the Southern Metropolitan Partnership has developed its advice to the Victorian Government on the regional priorities for the Southern Metropolitan Region.

The Southern Partnership's advice for 2017 included:

  • Housing: Provide greater access to affordable housing options across the region
  • Transport: Improve connectivity and access to employment, education, services and recreational activities
  • Education and Youth Engagement: Increase education and retention for children and young people
  • Water: Develop a regional approach to water usage to provide for long term economic growth and environmental benefit
